MSL training, made measurable

Falling prescriptions could not be tied back to MSL training, and there was no objective way to know whether MSLs understood the science. We built SCORM-compliant, LMS-ready modules with interactive video, expert review, and assessment and scoring.

At a glance

  • Client: The dermatology business of a global healthcare company
  • Market: Global
  • Audience: Medical science liaisons (MSLs)
  • Our role: Learning design, scientific content, medical review and assessment set-up
  • Area: Medical Education, Dermatology

The challenge

Prescriptions were falling, and leadership wanted to know whether MSL training was part of the answer. They could not tell.

Training was delivered as live sessions and slide decks. There was no record of who completed what, and no objective way to test whether MSLs had understood the science. Without that data, training could not be linked to performance in the field, or improved.

Our approach

We turned training into a system that produces data.

  • Trackable modules: We built SCORM-compliant modules (SCORM is a standard format that lets a learning management system, or LMS, record who opened a module, how far they got and how they scored). Every module was LMS-ready.
  • Formats that hold attention: Narrated slides, interactive video, podcasts and recordings of live sessions, combined in one module. For example, a module on storytelling in Medical Affairs brought together two podcasts and a recorded face-to-face training session.
  • Expert review: Medical experts reviewed every module for scientific accuracy before release.
  • Assessment and scoring: Each module ends with a knowledge check and a pass mark (for example, 8 out of 10). MSLs who do not pass can retake the test, and the LMS records every attempt.

What we delivered

  • Interactive SCORM training modules, ready for the client's LMS
  • Narration, podcasts and interactive video inside each module
  • Knowledge-check assessments with pass marks and retakes
  • Medical review of all content

The result

Learning you can measure

Trackable modules and assessments turn training into evidence.

Managers can now see completion and scores by MSL and by topic, spot gaps and plan refresher training where it is needed.
